June 20, 2008 – 2:02 pm

Any rock record producer worth his salt is familiar with John Bonhams unforgettable drum licks on When the Levee Breaks. It is probably the most heavily used drum rock sample of them all. Big record labels pay huge royalties to use samples like that, royalties that your average home studio producer could never afford.

You may not be able to afford John Bonham, but you can get the next best thing at incredible value. Its a plain fact that no rock song is complete without drums. So what do you do if you dont have a drummer? You can purchase drum loops and samples on compilation CDs that include a wide variety of licks and sounds.

Once youve had a taste, youll be back for more. Isnt it amazing how fast the hours go by while youre sitting at the computer recording and mixing music. There are so many things to try, so many drum loops to choose from, that youll have no choice but to write more songs to use them all!

You can use a drum rock sample to fill out a track that already has drums on it, or you can use it as your primary drum track. Thats the beauty of drum loops; you can mix and match, cut and paste, and be as creative as you want to be. Its your music, put your own stamp of originality on it.
